The Value of a Meaningful Funeral

A funeral is really a ceremony to say “good-bye” to someone who has been an important person in our life.

A funeral goes beyond a basic ceremony to purposely incorporate the unique and special nuances of the person who has died.  The sights of photo memories, the sounds of favorite music, the aroma of floral tributes, and the touch of family and friends that have come to encourage us… Each of our senses, engaged in what it means to love and to be loved, and just now, feel a little bit lost as to how we are going to continue.

All grief related, yet an important relational milestone in our lives, that can help give us the ability to get back on track eventually, as we should.  If you choose to pre-plan your own funeral, you will have the privilege of setting the tone that you want it to be, leaving a clear path for your family to follow.

Pictures_from_flash_drive_8-7-07_058You have the opportunity to describe your life, …Your interests, Your passions, and the way you chose to live,……. How you want to be remembered.   A time for you to really think through important issues and important people,… Your legacy.  The results for you are peace of mind.  The results for your family– a way to be brought together as a family when the time comes, and not a teasquare_14-109x110ring apart or struggle of trying to guess what you would have wanted.

Simple or Elaborate, the Value is in recognizing the true worth of life, embracing our own mortality, as we see a life lived well through new lenses, and giving deserved honor to those we love the most.

MONEY_PIC-173x161The Federal Trade Commission is the regulating body that oversees the pricing in the funeral industry. It regulates the exact format that the general price list to the public must be presented.

The state of Illinois regulates the requirements in both schooling and licensing in which to work as a funeral director/embalmer. The Comptroller’s Office determines the bonding licenses that regulate how and where monies are kept when “prearranging” funerals and funeral merchandise. The State also has specific laws surrounding the operation of cemeteries, their function and related merchandise. Illinois Counties and Cities have laws in which a business must follow to be given the right to operate. All these in an attempt to safeguard the consumer.

Some of these very detailed laws came to be, simply because of instances of greedy people, of “Curbside Funeral Directors” etc. had come to light,…those who didn’t want to “follow the rules” and had no real regard for the end use consumer.  These people just decided to go “into the funeral business”. When a person who wants to do “business” in the funeral industry, and then decides to “shortchange” any of the legal requirements, it is always the consumer that suffers the questionable outcome. Illinois currently has a bill pending regarding this illegal, extended activity.

A few years back, the funeral laws were adjusted to be in favor of the consumer, when the added opportunity for people “outside” of the funeral industry to “provide” funeral products came into being. (Not funeral services, just funeral merchandise). These “third party” options were originally given to opportunity to offer the informed customer other places to available to purchase funeral merchandise, besides the professional funeral provider,…if they chose to. (The licensed funeral director is still the legal entity to provide funeral services). In theory, a very good law. But just like many other industries, greed has been injected into the mix and now the consumer must be very diligent to research and review what he is getting in the end.

Many times these “Third Party Providers” tout how much they are the “only one” who “Cares” about you and your family,…  and how “Bad” the established funeral providers are to you, the consumer…. But that kind of “Care” can shortchange your legal safeguards and the laws put in place for you,.. the paying consumer.CORB4450

These “third party providers” care about getting your money in their pocket. That’s it. They don’t have invest in payroll taxes, or licensing fees.  They can’t provide any funeral services,..now or at the time they will be needed. These Promoters certainly are not invested in the community for the long haul. We have found that some of these firms have even told the customers that they “work with the local funeral homes” or that the “local funeral homes buy their caskets and merchandise from us too.” The answers to both of those deceptive quotes are a definite NO and NEVER.

These Outside Providers often “explain” what they are selling to you, but what are you really getting for your money? Do you have an “apples to apples” comparison in order to make the best decision for your money,…for your family? If neither one of you has any experience working in the funeral industry, and if you have not taken the time to actually visit with a legitimate funeral provider to find out what you should be comparing your purchase to,… then how do you really know what you are supposed to be getting for your money???!!!

At Tanzyus Logan, we follow the rules. All of them. We are accountable to the State of Illinois, to the Federal Government and to the families we serve. We pay all of the necessary fees and taxes and keep up with all the licenses required.

We are accountable to the Comptroller’s Office for our prearrangement plans. We are a family owned business and We grew up here,…we live here. We are fully invested in the community. We are the ones who “Care” about providing families good service and merchandise that is American made and fairly priced, (and often for less than the Off-brands) for many years to come.

We have had the experience of receiving third party “merchandise” and it always makes me sad. Sad that the family we are serving for funeral services, got an definitively inferior product (usually foreign made) and they paid A LOT more for it than what we could have provided for them.

Please, do yourself a favor.  Be an informed consumer. Take the time to check out the businesses you are dealing with. Even if the time seems limited and stressed. Do they have a business license in the county you are in? If this is a prearranged plan,…who and where are they keeping your money? An unlicensed, door-to-door salesman can be a bit pushy. Don’t let them be. Are they telling you to forgo checking with a reputable funeral provider? And stay away from any specific one? That “they” are the only ones that can help you, no one else?… Then be wary. Check around anyway. You are smart enough to know what to do from there. There is no harm in getting all the facts before you make a major funeral purchase decision, especially like a casket or a prearranged plan. In the end, you’ll be assured that for you and your family,… you made the best choice.

Setting a Higher Standard

Whefall path 1n we began our family-based service company in 2003, one of our main goals was to provide an exceptional funeral experience while keeping the fees as reasonable as possible.  In other words,…

to “Leave Memories, Not Debt” .

We have intently listened to the requests of the families we are honored to have served.  They, in turn, have determined what are the “most important things” needed when having a funeral “farewell” for their loved one.  From those humble beginnings, we have creatively developed a myriad of ways for each and every service to be truly unique. Whether elaborate or simple. The family being served always gets to do the choosing of what they alone need,…what is the most important to their family at this time.

And now, as we look back from 15th year of serving,…the implementation of those first set of goals have since taken their place of value and have now become the expected “standard of care” in our Central Illinois industry market.

Distinctively beautiful, one-of-a-kind photo creations in the service folders, family thank you cards, in cherished memory books and lifetime video productions, on cherished keepsakes and themed urns…. All these, as well as, producing personalized monuments and markers.  Just about anything that a picture tribute could be added to,… we have available.

And being receptive to the heartfelt input of the families being served, we have become the best at bringing those kind of creative ideas to fruition.  RST
